Design For Good
Tetra Pak and MRM Celebrates Launch of Second Eco Design Competition

Kuala Lumpur, 11 June 2013 – Tetra Pak’s highly anticipated Eco Design Competition 2013 kick starts today. Themed ‘Design for Good’, the competition is a result of the continued collaboration between Tetra Pak (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and Majlis Rekabentuk Malaysia (MRM). This year, the competition is opened to anyone and everyone interested in upcycling used beverage cartons into functional and commercially viable products.

In its second year running, Tetra Pak’s ‘Design for Good’ Eco Design Competition challenges participants to up the ante, not stopping at just creating good designs but also designs that do good by making a positive impact on the environment and people in need. The competition seeks winning design(s) that will then be donated to the Beautiful Gate Foundation for the Disabled for commercialization as an additional fundraising tool to aid their operations. Residents of the foundation will further be empowered with the technical skills and marketing support necessary to commercially reproduce these upcycled designs for sale; hence extending the benefits of the competition from the environment to society at large.

Besides making a tangible impact to help the community in need, the ‘Design for Good’ Eco Design Competition also aims to encourage the growth of eco-entrepreneurship at the same time. The top 20 shortlisted designs will be part of the Finalists Exhibition at Publika and top 10 finalists are eligible to attend an exclusive ‘Make it Good’ design workshop that will be conducted to assist them in perfecting their designs.

“Tetra Pak’s motto – ‘Protect What’s Good’ – has always guided our business approach and it is the main inspiration behind this year’s Eco Design Competition theme; Design for Good. What makes this year’s competition even more exciting for us is being able to develop a fuller plan, to go beyond upcycling and reducing waste in landfills in a fun manner. We are able to make a long term contribution to a community in need and encourage eco-entrepreneurship at the same time,” said Gaine Clarke, Managing Director of Tetra Pak (Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines) Sdn Bhd.

“Last year’s Eco Design competition was a great start to a novel concept and we are very happy to partner with Tetra Pak again this year as curriculum partner. We are also glad that the competition has additional elements that combine the best of design innovation and creativity with commercialization,” said Pn. Futom Shikh Jaafar, Senior General Manager of MRM. “We are particularly excited about this element of the competition and look forward to working with contest participants towards making their designs commercially viable.”

“We were thrilled when Tetra Pak approached us with the competition idea and we look forward to reproducing these upcycled designs for sale. We appreciate that they saw beyond our disabilities but believed in empowering residents of the home to be able to be independent and self-reliant,” said Sia Siew Chin, Executive Director of Beautiful Gate Foundation for the Disabled.

Starting today until the 6th of September, participants can submit photos of their designs to www.facebook.com/tetra.pak along with a “how-to” video and schematic plan of their designs.
