THE OBJECTIVES

1. To arouse the interest of studies in Physics.
2. To develop activities outside the curriculum for the Physics students.
3. To encourage students to apply Physics knowledge learnt in school.
4. To motivate creative approach towards Physics.
5. To promote excellence and higher-order thinking skills in the studies of Physics.
6. To further explore and deepen applications of related topics in the field of Physics.

THE RULES

The levels of the competition

1. Two phases of the competition will be held, which are:

i) The National Physics Competition (The Secondary Level)

ii) The National Physics Competition (The Pre- University level)

Qualification

2. The National Physics Competition (Secondary)

Open to all Physics students who will sit for the SPM for the first time or equivalent to SPM in the year 2008 in schools, institutes and colleges in Malaysia.

3. The National Physics Competition (Pre-University )

Open to all Physics students (except those selected for IPhO 2008) of the STPM level or the A-level or equivalent to it in the year 2008 from schools, institutes, matriculation centres, colleges and polytechnics in Malaysia.

Participation

4. Every school/ institute/ college can nominate five (5) or more participants for each level of the competition.
5. Each participant is automatically qualified to compete in both the individual and team categories. Schools/ institutes/ colleges are encouraged to send in many participants as possible so the chance to win in the team category will increase.

Registration Fees

6. An amount of RM 50 (for 5 first participants) will be charged for the registration. Subsequently every additional participant will be charged RM10.00 only.

The Structure of the Competition

7. The National Physics Competition ( Secondary )

A test will be held on 24th July 2008, Thursday, from 9.00am till 11.30 am simultaneously nationwide.

The contestants are required to sit for a theoretical paper which will last for 2½ hours consists of 70 multiple-choice questions. All the questions will be in English only.

The syllabus proposed for the competition is the KBSM Physics Syllabus, 2008. Nevertheless, the questions are tested on comprehending higher-order thinking skills in Physics.

The marks allocated for the test is 70, which, means 1 mark for each right answer. No penalty for wrong answers. Each participant will be evaluated individually.

The marks scored by each individual contestant will be considered as their scores. These scores will be calculated to determine the winners in the individual category.

For the team category, the team that scores the highest of all the 5 contestants is the winner. For participation of more than 5 contestants, 5 best scores of the contestants will be totalled. The scores of the other 5 participants according to merit will be summed to get the second best team. This follows suite to calculate the teams’ scores of the schools/ institutes/ colleges that signed in more than 5 participants.

8. The National Physics Competition (Pre-University)

A test will be held on 24th July 2008, Thursday, from 9.00am till 11.30 am simultaneously nationwide.

The participants are required to take a written test of 2 ½ hours as shown
