DESCRIPTION:
PETALING JAYA: A golden opportunity to represent the nation in London awaits two young Malaysians who have a flair for speaking, as well as a global viewpoint.

The all-expenses-paid trip is the prize for the winner and runner-up in the sixth English Speaking Union of Malaysia (Esum)-The Star-HSBC Speaking Competition 2008. In London, the pair will take part in the International Public Speaking Competition 2008 in May.

“This competition encourages young Malaysians to have a grasp of global themes and changes,” said Esum chairman Tunku Dara Tan Sri Naquiah Tuanku Ja’afar, at the launch of the competition here yesterday.

HSBC deputy chairman and chief executive officer Irene M. Dorner concurred.

“Participants won’t just learn ideas but will be challenged to think wider. Public speaking can be a real confidence booster,” she said.

The emphasis on global awareness and idealism is evident as

the first heat of the competition’s preliminary round is based on

the theme New Horizons, New Frontiers.

The competition will start with workshops to be conducted by public speaking experts. The workshops will be held on Feb 16 in Kuala Lumpur, and on Feb 23 in Petaling Jaya, Penang, Kuching, Kuala Terengganu and Muar.
