Australia and Asia’s richest literary award launched
The richest literary award in Australia and Asia has been launched by Premier Alan Carpenter.
Mr Carpenter said the inaugural Western Australian Premier’s Australia-Asia Literary Award, worth $110,000, had the power to excite and expand the State’s cultural horizons.

The award is open to any book-length work of literary fiction published in print or electronically - something recognizing the increasing predominance of electronic media, such as online and mobile phone formats.
The judging panel will consist of three renowned authors and literary experts drawn from some of the nominating countries. They include Pakistani born and multi-award winning author, Kamila Shamsie, author of ‘Kartography’ and ‘Broken Verses’ and Sri Lankan born, Hong Kong based columnist and founder of the ‘Asia Literary Review’, Nury Vittachi.
The $110,000 prize makes the Award the richest in the nation. Where the winning entry has been translated into English, the author will receive $88,000 and the translator $22,000.
The Award is open to works written by an author resident in Australia or Asia, or which are primarily set in Australia or an Asian country. Works must have been either written in, or translated into English and published in the preceding year.
Entries for the Award are now open and will close on 31 May, 2008.

Call for Entries to the Western Australian Premier’s AustraliaAsia Literary Award
Entries are called for the Western Australian Premier’s AustraliaAsia Literary Award 2008.
Entry is open to all residents of Australia and Asia* until 31 May 2008. Rules of Entry 1. The AustraliaAsia Literary Award offers AUD $
110,000 to a booklength work of literary fiction
in English, or in any other language and published in English translation, that has been published in the preceding calendar year and was written by an author resident in Australia or Asia or which is primarily set in Australia or an Asian country. If the winning entry is a work translated into English, the author will receive AUD $88,000 and the translator AUD $22,000. 2. The Award accepts nominations of books published solely electronically as well as in print. All entries must be nominated by the Publisher. No selfpublished entries are eligible.
This includes arrangements whereby the author has paid a third party to publish the work. Works of joint authorship are eligible for the Award. Joint authorship is defined here as meaning coauthors,
editors, illustrators, translators etc. However, anthologies or stories by more than three different authors and brought together by an editor, are not eligible. 3. To be eligible for the 2008 Award, works must have been published between 1 January and 31 December 2007. In the case of works translated into English, the work in the original language must have been published after 1 January 2004 and published in English between 1 January and 31 December 2007. 4. The Western Australian Department of Culture and the Arts may determine at its discretion whether or not an entry is eligible. 5. All works submitted will be judged on their literary merit. The judging panel will consist of three renowned authors and literary experts drawn from the nominating countries. The judges may at their discretion call for works which have not been entered in the Award. The judges reserve the right not to recommend an Award if they consider that there are no entered works of sufficient merit. The judges’ decisions are final. 1

6. Only works entered on the official entry form and submitted with four original copies of the work can be considered for the awards. In the case of internetonly published works,
the URL of the work must be listed on the Entry Form. Books and other material will not be returned. All works must be written in the English language. A separate entry form must be used for each work nominated and mailed to: AustraliaAsia Literary Award State Library of Western Australia Perth Cultural Centre Perth WA 6000 Australia 7.
The closing date for nominations is 31 May 2008. Submissions must reach the address above or be postmarked by the closing date. 8. Publishers must ensure that nominated authors (and translators if appropriate) are available to attend the Award ceremony in November 2008 in Perth, Australia and to participate in publicity activity for the Award. The three shortlisted
authors (and translators if appropriate) will have travel and accommodation costs covered by the Western Australian Department of Culture and the Arts. 9.
