THE Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur (JCKL), the Japanese Chamber of Trade & Industry, Malaysia (JACTIM), the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia and the Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur (JFKL), in co-operation with the Ministry of Education Malaysia, will be organising the fifth Japanese language speech contest for secondary school students in Malaysia.

ORATORICAL SKILLS: Muhammad Yusuf Safwan Mustadza from Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah.

This programme started in April 2004.

The objectives of the contest are to provide an opportunity for Japanese language learners at secondary school level to express their opinions and thoughts in Japanese as well as to display their language skills.

In addition, it is hoped that the contest will deepen mutual understanding among secondary school students on the importance of intercultural and cross-cultural communication.

The contest will take place on April 27 on a Sunday from 1pm-5pm at The Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur Hall at No. 2, Jalan 1/86, Off Jalan Taman Seputeh, Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysians who are between 15 and 18 as of April 1 and who have not been to Japan for more than seven days between April 2003 and March 2008 are eligible.

Previous winners are not eligible to enter the contest.

Contestants need to be students of any public or private secondary school at the time of application. He/she must be a non-native Japanese speaker and neither of his/her parent should be Japanese.

Contestants will be required to speak on any theme of their choice and their prepared speech must be between 800 to 1,200 words. They must complete their speech within the five-minute time allocation.

The grand prize winner of this contest will be invited to represent Malaysia at The 13th Japanese Speech Award (JSA) in Tokyo.

JSA is an international Japanese speech contest competed by high school students learning Japanese from 13 countries.

The programme will include language workshops, cultural activities, sightseeing, and interaction with other high school students from Japan and the contestants.

In conjunction with the speech contest, the organisers are also selecting two candidates from among the 12 finalists to attend its “Japan Foundation 2008 Japanese-Language Programme for High School Students” — a 15-day study tour programme to Japan, invited by the Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, Kansai.

Applications will be accepted from contestants from normal day schools, societies and language schools.

Only one contestant from each secondary school (either public or private) will be accepted. Incomplete applications will be rejected.

IMPAC Dublin Literary Award for Young Malaysians 2008

In 1995, IMPAC, in collaboration with the Municipal Government of Dublin City, established the world’s richest book prize. This prize is awarded to the author of a work of fiction written in English or translated into English. Dublin was chosen to host this prize on account of the city’s rich literary heritage. IMPAC is now involved in organising young writers’ awards in a number of countries.
